Sunday is over?

I barely know what day it is because I have slept most of the weekend away to recuperate.

Still need to get started on my Japanese essay and worksheet.

To everyone who is unwell too, get well soon.

ps. how can one do their homework when one's head is in a haze and can barely think in one language, let alone translate to another. my mom just looked at me staring blankly at the piece of paper and asked, "are you writing yet?"

名詞が名詞に代わって (nikawatte)

Jul. 12th, 2009 | 01:10 am
posted by: [info]jgram_2

名詞が名詞に代わって (nikawatte)

Meaning: use Nounに instead of Nounが
Example: instead of this, use that

[ View this entry online ]

  Notes:
meishi + ni kawatte
the base of this grammar point is the polite request form [V-てform ください]

the dictionary form of かわって is かわる which means to substatute or to change from one thing to another.

example:

今日は 大嫌いケーキが私の一番好きなのにかわりました。

Today, My favorit cake was substatued with one I hate.

The basic form of this is
Noun+ga Noun+ni kawaru

Noun+に was replaced by Noun+が

In order to change this to a request we simply change kawaru to a request form

Example:
代わって 下さい Please substatute it

  Comments:
  • based on the examples, it seems that the description "instead of" isn't complete, maybe you should ad "for" or would it be more accurate to say "for the benefit of person"? (contributor: anon)
  • Actually i consulted a native speaker, and apparently kawarini is mainly used for an "on behalf of" type phrase, whereas nikawatte is mostly for "instead of".
However, the examples we have here only seem to give the "on behalf of" sense... (contributor: anon)
  • It sounds like "in the place of" captures the nuances best, as translated in sentence 2. It's substitutionary.

Here, in the place of humans, robots are doing the work.

Jim wrote the letter, in Betty's place.

I'll do everything in your place, so you only have to wait here. (contributor: scorduan)
  • In the examples above, the に noun is the one that gets replaced. But the "Meaning" and "Notes" sections (at the time when I am writing) say that the に noun does the replacing (that the が noun gets replaced). From what I have seen elsewhere, the examples are correct, and the explanations have it backwards. (contributor: Fritz)
  • sd (contributor: tamilselvan_t)
  • Anon, according to my text book its the other way around. nikawatte is "On behalf of" as in example #6782 above, kawarini is "instead of". Hope that helps. (contributor: edwinbradford)

VS Arashi #64 Summary

mood: lazy lazy
posted by: [info]godsgirl7 in [info]arashi_on

I just finished my summary of this week's VS Arashi, in which Nino is cocky and Ohno doesn't say much...oh wait, that's normal. Also, watch the guests bully Arashi into giving them handicaps all the time. There was no epic guest this time like there have been the past couple weeks (dang), but it was a fun episode, so I hope you all can enjoy my summary. ^^

As a reminder, I'm still just learning Japanese, so there are very likely mistakes and things left out. Feel free to join [info]arashi_track or friend [info]arashi_tracker to follow my weekly summaries.

  • Is this just used when the outcome is negative?
I went to all the effort to do X, but 残念 it didn't work out...
    like けっきょく (contributor: dc)
  • sekkaku always seems to come at the start of a sentence (contributor: dc)
  • I don't think the outcome is always negative as the exmplaes show.
    折角・・・のに、(結局)negative.
    折角・・・のだから、positive.

〜てはいられない・〜てばかりはいられない (tehairarenai / tebakarihairarenai)

〜てはいられない・〜てばかりはいられない (tehairarenai / tebakarihairarenai)

    Meaning: can't / can't afford 〜(doing something)
Example: we can't be relaxing like this drinking tea

[ View this entry online ]

  Notes:
「〜ていることができない」という可能表現ですが、そこから「〜状態を続けられない」という意味が現れます。
「〜てばかりはいられない」という形は、過度であることを強調する時によく使われます。

one can't afford doing or continue doing a certain action because of nervousnes or to meet the demands of that particular situation or moment. 「〜てばかりはいられない」is almost the same as 「〜てはいられない」, only the ばかり emphasizes of " only just doing .... (action that one should not be doing that moment)".

  • In #5856, "Since the customers will be coming in no time and it will be a hard time" is awkward. Should read: "Since customers will be arriving in no time and we will have more than our fill..." (contributor: bamboo4)
  • Sorry if this is too simplistic, but am wondering if I can use this with the negative form as well?
For example, can I say "___ しなくてはいられない" (Can't afford not to do __)
    (contributor: wribbit)
  • hey wribbit,

If you want to say you cant afford not to do, you should probably use I must do or have to grammar forms. English and Japanese don`t have the same idiomes, so trying to translate your thoughts exactly will end up in strange Japanese. when you want to say Can`t afford not to do try

しなくではいけない (I must) or しなくではならない (I have to)

also if you want to add a hypothetical if to it
    しなければいけない or しなければならない

    (contributor: tigert)
